Logistics: Accommodation, Security, Shuttle, Feeding & Visa
We want your time at the Global Playback & Improv Theatre Gathering – Hosted in Africa to be as smooth, safe, and enjoyable as possible. From where you’ll stay to how you’ll get around and what you’ll eat, we’ve thought about the details so you can focus on what truly matters — creating, performing, and connecting.
Feeding
Food is a big part of our story, and at this festival, we want every meal to feel like part of the experience.
There will be a coffee and bread table open all day at the venue. A friendly spot to pause, grab a bite, and connect with others. You’re also invited to bring something small from your country to share. Maybe it’s a snack, candy, or homemade treat. It’s a simple way to taste the world together.
Lunch will be provided by the festival each day and is included in your registration. Expect a mix of delicious Nigerian favorites like jollof rice, plantain, and grilled chicken, along with familiar Western meals. Everything will be freshly prepared by our trusted local vendors who know how to cook with heart.
Dinner can be pre-ordered from our registered food vendors, with plenty of options for every taste. Prices are friendly, and both Nigerian and international dishes will be available.
We care about everyone’s needs — vegan, vegetarian, and halal meals will all be included in our menu options, so no one is left out.
Most partner hotels include breakfast, so you’ll be well-fed from morning till night.
More than just eating, we see food as a chance to connect and share stories. Whether you’re sipping coffee with new friends, sharing a bite from home, or discovering your new favorite Nigerian dish, we hope every meal adds a little joy to your festival experience.
Accommodation
Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, offers some of the most comfortable and affordable accommodation options on the continent. You’ll find everything from cozy guesthouses and modern apartments to elegant hotels — with prices ranging from about $40 per night for simple comfort to $200 per night for a fully ensuite room or serviced apartment that can even be shared.
You can make your own bookings directly, or simply indicate your preference on the pre-registration form, and our Accommodation Support Team will help find the right space for you. Most hotels also offer complimentary breakfast for one guest.
Security
Abuja is known for being one of the most secure and welcoming cities in Nigeria. Still, we understand that safety matters deeply, especially for international visitors. The festival will have extra security arrangements at the venue and around designated accommodation areas, so you can relax, explore, and enjoy every moment without worry.
Shuttle Service
We’ll be providing shuttle buses for airport pickup and drop-off to make your arrival and departure easy. There will also be daily shuttles connecting main accommodation areas with the festival venue. For those who prefer flexibility, Uber and Bolt are readily available and affordable across the city.
We’re keeping transportation simple, safe, and convenient — so you never have to stress about how to get where you’re going.
Visa Support
To make your travel easier, we will provide official visa support letters to confirmed participants and facilitators. Our team is also working closely with relevant Nigerian government agencies to ensure a smooth and straightforward visa application process for all international visitors.
Once your registration is confirmed, you’ll receive detailed instructions and a personalized visa letter to include with your application.
Arrival and Departure
The Global Playback & Improv Theatre Gathering will take place from June 21 to 27, 2026 in Abuja, Nigeria. Participants are encouraged to arrive on or before June 20 to settle in and acclimate. Departures can be planned for June 28 or later.
While our official activities will cover the festival period, you’re welcome to explore other parts of Nigeria before or after the event — including Lagos, Ogun State, or Calabar, known for their art, culture, and vibrant hospitality. Local markets in Abuja will also be open for guided visits if you’d like to experience daily life, crafts, and traditional food.
Most international travelers will fly into Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (ABV) in Abuja. Our festival team and volunteers will be available at the airport on key arrival days to welcome participants and help coordinate transportation.
Health and Safety
Abuja is equipped with good hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies, all within reach of the main accommodation areas. There are no mandatory vaccinations for travel to Nigeria, but we recommend that travelers carry any personal medication and ensure regular vaccines are up to date.
We also suggest malaria prevention measures, such as mosquito repellent and light clothing for the evenings. Bottled and filtered water will be available at the venue and through our food vendors.
Weather and What to Expect
June in Abuja is part of the mild rainy season — warm, with light showers and plenty of sunshine. Expect daytime temperatures of around 27–31°C (80–88°F). Light, breathable clothing is best, along with a light jacket or umbrella for occasional rain.
Currency and Payment
The local currency is the Nigerian Naira (₦). Many hotels and large stores accept cards, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash for taxis, local markets, or smaller vendors. ATMs and currency exchange services will be provided at the venue.
Emergency Contact and Festival Support
During the festival, a dedicated helpline will be available for emergencies, directions, or general assistance. Contact details and emergency numbers will be shared closer to the event date. Our volunteer team will also be on-site to help with logistics, transport, and local guidance.
Sustainability and Community
We encourage participants to support local businesses, shop responsibly, and reduce waste wherever possible. Abuja is a city full of warmth, color, and creativity and we want our presence to contribute positively to the community that welcomes us.
