Unleash Your Creativity. Tell Your Story. Transform Your Community.

Art Africa Internship Program 2026

Do you dream of using theatre to inspire, connect, and create change? Are you passionate about performance, storytelling, and collaboration? Welcome to the Art Africa Internship Program 2026, a one-of-a-kind initiative designed to empower young Africans to express themselves, build professional skills, and take the stage in ways that truly matter.

ACT | PARTICIPATE | COLLABORATE

Through this program, you’ll immerse yourself in the transformative world of Playback Theatre and Improvisational Theatre—forms of live performance that thrive on spontaneity, storytelling, and active audience participation. You won’t just perform; you’ll bring real stories to life, collaborate with peers across Africa and the diaspora, and develop skills that open doors to opportunities in the arts, leadership, and community engagement.

This is your chance to step into the spotlight, share your voice, and create theatre that inspires change, while connecting with a network of mentors, performers, and fellow storytellers shaping the future of Pan-African theatre.

Why This Matters

Across the globe, African voices remain underrepresented in improvisational and playback theatre. Stories from our communities, cultures, and lived experiences are often overlooked, and opportunities to perform, train, and lead in these art forms are limited.

The Art Africa Internship Program 2026 is about more than telling stories, it’s about claiming space, building professional theatre skills, and amplifying African voices on local, national, and international stages. By focusing on Playback Theatre and Improvisational Theatre, this program addresses the under-representation of Africans providing high-quality training, mentorship, and performance opportunities that equip participants with the confidence and expertise to thrive as artists and changemakers.

“For the first time ever, African stories will take center stage in a Pan-African improv and playback theatre program. Your voice, your story, your stage.”
– Oluwadamilola Abdulai-Apotieri, Program Director

This is your opportunity to develop your craft, perform with impact, and join a historic cohort shaping the future of Pan-African theatre. The program empowers you to contribute to a growing, diverse community of African improvisers, ensuring that our stories, creativity, and perspectives are celebrated and shared globally.

What You’ll Experience

Improvisational Theatre: Develop the core skills of improv; thinking on your feet, collaborating spontaneously, and creating compelling performances in the moment. Short-form improv games, exercises, and scene work will sharpen your creativity, timing, and stage presence.

Playback Theatre: Learn to transform real stories shared by audiences into live performances that resonate emotionally and socially. You will practice active listening, empathy, and ensemble storytelling to bring community voices to life.

Hybrid Learning: Participate in interactive online sessions, country-based workshops, and guided mentorship that support your growth every step of the way.

Community Performance Projects: Form mini-ensembles to create and perform shows in your neighborhood, school, or community center—bringing your new skills directly to the people around you.

“Imagine the moment your story is performed on stage, alongside improvisation and real-life narratives, connecting with people who see themselves in your experiences. That’s the transformative power of this training.”

This approach ensures that improv and playback theatre are equally central, giving you a comprehensive foundation in both forms while preparing you to perform, collaborate, and lead creatively.

Your Journey: From Training to Stage

The Art Africa Internship Program 2026 is designed to take you from curious beginner to confident performer, mentor, and changemaker. Your journey unfolds in five immersive steps:

Step 1: Hybrid Learning

Kick off your training with interactive online sessions led by international theatre practitioners. Each session lasts 3–5 hours, 2–3 times per week, combining hands-on exercises, improvisation games, and playback techniques. You’ll learn the fundamentals of ensemble work, scene creation, and storytelling while connecting with peers across the continent.

Step 2: Local Workshops

Bring your online learning to life in country-based in-person workshops. Here, you’ll practice your skills, experiment with short-form improv and playback scenes, and begin forming mini-ensembles—the heart of your community storytelling projects.

Step 3: Mentorship

Receive personalized guidance from experienced trainers and peer mentors. One-on-one support helps refine your craft, strengthen your stage presence, and build the confidence to perform stories that matter. Mentorship also equips you with leadership and collaboration skills essential for ensemble work.

Step 4: Community Storytelling Projects

Step into your local community as a performer and storyteller. With your mini-ensemble, you’ll create performances that reflect the voices, experiences, and cultures around you. This is your chance to connect with audiences, make theatre accessible, and practice the art of live storytelling in meaningful, real-world contexts.

Step 5: First Global Playback & Improv Gathering (June 21–27, 2026)

Outstanding participants will take the stage in Nigeria at the first-ever Pan-African Playback & Improv Theatre Gathering, performing alongside artists from across Africa and the diaspora. This historic event celebrates your growth, your stories, and your contribution to shaping a truly Pan-African improvisational theatre community.

Your story begins in the training room, grows on the local stage, and culminates in a global celebration of African voices and creativity.
