About Access to Play:
Access to Play is a transformative arts organization that uses the power of creative expression to promote mental health, psychosocial support, and community development. Through improvisation, applied drama, and storytelling, we work to support marginalized communities, advocate for social change, and foster healing. Our projects span sectors such as criminal justice, refugee and migrant support, gender-based violence, and internally displaced persons (IDPs). We are committed to building resilience, connection, and empowerment in individuals and communities through art-based methods.
The Role:
We are seeking passionate, talented, and dedicated Resident Actors to join Nigeria’s first Improv Theatre Company. As part of our artistic ensemble, you will be trained in the art of improvisational theatre and other creative performance techniques, including playback theatre and theatre for social justice. This role will allow you to not only develop your craft but also use your talents to create positive change through art-based community interventions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Attend daily rehearsals and training sessions to perfect your improv and performance techniques alongside other team members.
- Participate in Theatre Classes and contribute to various club activities that foster community engagement.
- Help with marketing and promoting performances, ensuring maximum impact and visibility of our projects.
- Collaborate on the production of performances, from conceptualization through to execution.
- Perform at internal and external events related to Access to Play’s mission, including social change-focused performances in communities, schools, and institutions.
- Contribute to the development of new works, and help design creative arts programs that engage and empower marginalized groups.
Who We’re Looking For:
We are looking for individuals who are not only passionate about acting and performance but also dedicated to using their craft to foster social change and mental wellness. The ideal candidate will have the following:
- A passion for performance – particularly improvised acting, storytelling, and theatre for social justice.
- Creativity and openness to learning new forms of theatre and improvisation.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with a diverse team and engage with a wide range of audiences.
- A commitment to using theatre as a tool for social change, community development, and empowerment.
- Reside in Abuja or be willing to relocate to Abuja for a one-year commitment.
- Fluency in English (additional languages are a plus).
- An artistic skill (e.g., singing, spoken word, dance, etc.) is highly preferred.
