Social Justice & Advocacy: Harnessing Creativity for Change

At Access to Creative Play Foundation, we are deeply committed to using the transformative power of the arts to advance social justice, advocate for equality, and empower marginalized communities. Through creative performance and interactive theatre, we address critical global issues, amplify the voices of underrepresented groups, and foster social reform across a wide range of topics—from gender-based violence (GBV) to children’s rights, from gender equality to climate change. Our efforts aim to inspire action, spark social change, and create lasting impact by advocating for the rights of women, children, and vulnerable communities.

Art as a Tool for Social Change
We believe that creative expression—through Forum Theatre, performance interventions, and other artistic forms—has the unique ability to engage people on a deep emotional level. It challenges societal norms, encourages dialogue, and creates spaces for marginalized voices to be heard. Our work is rooted in the principle that art is a powerful tool for social justice, driving awareness, education, and advocacy in ways that traditional methods often cannot.
Key Areas of Focus and Impact
Over the years, Access to Creative Play Foundation has delivered numerous interventions that have directly addressed critical issues affecting communities worldwide. Through these impactful events and programs, we have:

      • Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Gender Equality: In 2024, Maru-a-Pula used Forum Theatre to engage over 2,000 direct participants in exploring community-based solutions to GBV, encouraging collective action and empowerment. Our HeforShe campaign reached 1,000 adolescent boys and girls, using Forum Theatre to explore gender equality and advocate for women’s empowerment.
      • International Women’s Day Performance Interventions: For International Women’s Day, we have developed numerous performance interventions focused on promoting gender equality, celebrating women’s achievements, and advocating for an end to discrimination.
      • WASH Advocacy in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): We’ve raised awareness about water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in IDP camps, highlighting the essential needs of vulnerable populations and advocating for improved living conditions.
      • Good Governance Initiatives – “Build a Government”: Through the “Build a Government” initiative, we engage communities in dialogues around governance, accountability, and the role of citizens in ensuring transparent and effective leadership.
      • Advocacy on Early Marriage and Harmful Traditional Practices: Our interventions have focused on tackling the issues of early marriage and harmful traditional practices, aiming to educate communities about their dangers and advocating for the protection of children and women’s rights.
      • Violence Against Children: We’ve developed impactful interventions addressing violence against children, utilizing performance to raise awareness, educate, and foster societal change.
      • Annual International Children’s Day of Broadcasting: Each year, we host the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting, a platform to highlight critical issues affecting children globally, amplifying their voices through creative and thought-provoking performances.

A Creative Path Toward Social Justice
The work we do at Access to Creative Play Foundation is not just about raising awareness—it's about creating tangible change. Through our diverse range of performances, workshops, and advocacy campaigns, we empower individuals and communities to reflect, act, and drive positive transformation. By using theatre and creative play, we break down barriers to understanding and engage people in the collective effort to build a more just, equitable world. We are proud of the progress we’ve made, but we recognize that the journey towards social justice is ongoing. The challenges we address—GBV, children’s rights, gender equality, climate change, and more—require continued advocacy, education, and action. Through our artistic interventions, we create spaces for dialogue, foster empathy, and help communities find creative solutions to these complex issues.
Be a part of the movement for a just and equitable world.
